Wearable IOT Case Study

Ohio State University Research works app for Stroke patients. This app monitors the User's hand movement throughout the day and notifies the user once in 10 minutes if minimal/no movement is detected. The notifications can be toggled On - Up Key/Off - Down Key. The counters can be reset by long pressing the Select Key.

FEATURES

Intelligent tracking

The app tracks the hand movements of patients  intellignetly . Any small movements like typing  or slowly moving the hand is not considered a good move.

Historical data transfer

The app records a month's data and is available for transfer to the paired device.

Daily Counter

What's the Challenge?

Stroke is categorized as the leading cause for disability, it reduces the mobility of a person over the age of 65 in most cases leaving them in long-term disability and be needing continuous care for recovery.

According to the government data, stroke has been the reason for the death of nearly 140,000 Americans each year, which is 1 out of 20 deaths are caused by stroke.

With nearly 800,000 people being affected by stroke each year, 90% of them experience stroke for the first time in life.

It also leaves the US government with huge financial impact, it has been observed that the government spending in the care for stroke patients is about $34 Billion dollars year on year.

Patients who arrive at the emergency room within 3 hours of their first symptoms often have less disability 3 months after a stroke than those who received delayed care.

Dr.Gauthier from OSU, Wexner Medical Center approached us with a specific problem statement which is to improve the chances of survival for the stroke patients, continuously monitor health and to be able to act swiftly in case of any emergency.

We realized the importance of arriving at a solution for the problem, as we are not only dealing with a business objective but also acknowledge the social cause and responsibility in improving the living standards of millions of people ailing from post-stroke ailments.

The simplest way forward is to leverage the Internet of Things(IoT) to establish real-time monitoring system and to seamlessly coordinate the patients' needs.

Our Approach

Our magnitude of discussions and research helped us to come to a conclusion that hand movements of stroke patients can give us a clear indication about the real-time care needs,

The idea of observing hand movements at close quarters leveraging wearables was then novel and encouraged by our client.

We unanimously decided to keep a 10 minutes time window as a yardstick to trigger notifications based on patients hand movements, i.e the provider or the caregivers will be instantly notified if there’s no hand movement for 10 minutes or more in patients.

The small sample size of people we observed gave us the confidence that the device helped them improve their care delivery, also improved the chances of patient recovery.

Outcome

The watch-on application was first introduced to 30 patients in our first roll-out, the product soon started meeting the desired expectations of our clients with regards to patient experience and seamless monitoring.

There was a 93% percent improvement in timely response to the patients, which helped them gain a lot of confidence during their phase of recovery.

Catering to over 1500 patients over the period of 3 number of years had given us the insights on what could be the next step in adding value to the platform,

The importance of gathering health information and putting data insights to best use prompted us to recommend a mobile application couple with the existing wearable technology for more accurate results and improvement of the overall process.

This idea was well received by our client’s which led to the formation, more powerful, more intuitive, data backed model which is now a turn-key solution in addressing a spectrum of needs in the patient monitoring space.

Evolution of the application:

The product has evolved in both the quarters, patient-facing application and the provider facing application.

What started as a simple straightforward smart-watch only application tool to monitor patients hand movements has seen tremendous progress since the days of its inception.

With an agenda of reaping the benefits of analytics and predictive modeling techniques, our product has been upgraded from watch-only application to android platform as well.

Now the tool not only monitors real-time data but has a track of historical data, stored and showed in the form of the convenient dashboard for providers to help their care delivery process a lot more effective.

The comprehensive solution is now embraced by more than 100 number of hospital dealing with stroke-related ailments, with over 1500 patients onboard.
